Most people see a Oscar and think it would make a great fish for their 10 gallon tank. Most people are unware of how large this type of fish will grow and even when listed for 10 gallons they will shortly outgrow this. It is most common to setup a single oscar to live in a 90 to 100 gallon tank. If you want to have more than one you ussually want to go to three and will most likely need a 150 to 200 gallon tank.
As a tropical fish, they prefer water temperatures in the mid 70s, making water heaters a must. How @@AMAZONTEXT;B000SSCT3A;many heaters@@ you need will depend on the size of tank. It make take purchasing two heaters to reach the right temperature in your tank. The size of tank may also require you to upgrade to a canister filter. The hang on back filters will not do it for an oscar. They are both a messy eater and a very dirty fish. It would be much better to over filter than to under filter the tank. Plan on getting a filter that is rated for a @@AMAZONTEXT;B000I1O2PK;150 gallon tank or higher @@ and putting it into your 100 gallon tank. A good biological filter for an oscar is ideal. Oscars typically prefer drift wood and rock decorations over real or plastic plants. It is preferable to make your tank full of things that are unmovable, or bare of things like plants. When possible go with a fine rock substrate over the larger washed river stone. This is due to oscars love to move their tank bottoms around as they wish. If you are considering purchasing an oscar, it would be highly recommended to do some research on them as there are a few things that are a bit unique to this cichlid.
